Vesuvianite is a complex silicate found in stunning shades of olive, yellow, green, as well as brown, yellow, and blue. It was officially named vesuvianite in 1795 by geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner after its discovery near Mount Vesuvius in Italy. Idiocrase was coined in 1796 by French mineralogist René Just Haüy from the Greek words eidos (form) and krasis (mixture) due to its crystal shapes. Both names are perfectly acceptable, however, gemologists and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) typically prefer the term idiocrase, while mineralogists and collectors generally use vesuvianite.
